In the Netherlands, a self-learning algorithm falsely labeled thousands of claims as fraudulent by the Dutch tax authority as fraudulent. For years, the tax authority baselessly ordered thousands of families to pay back their claims, pushing many into onerous debt and destroying lives in the process. 60 countries already have national AI initiatives, 60 of them in the public sector. The Dutch government has now resigned over the kinderopvangvangtoeslagaffaire: the childcare benefits affair.
