GOOGLE-BACKED PROJECT FIRESAT AIMS TO DETECT WILDFIRES FROM SPACE, LAUNCH SET FOR 2025!
In a groundbreaking effort to combat the growing threat of wildfires caused by climate change, a Google-backed initiative is set to launch a satellite network into orbit. The Earth Fire Alliance, and startup science venture, Muon Space, are at the helm of this ambitious project. Financed by Google.org, and supported by Google's research team, the initiative represents a significant advancement in wildfire monitoring and prevention technology.
Named FireSat, the constellation of satellites will provide an unprecedented capability to detect small fires before they become large, uncontrolled conflagrations, and will continuously monitor their growth. At present, the technology in existing satellite systems can only detect larger fires, leaving smaller fires unnoticed until they escalate in size. However, this is set to change with the deployment of the innovative FireSat satellite array. FireSat is formulated to detect fires as small as a 5x5 meter space, significantly enhancing our early warning capabilities.
The FireSat network will comprise over 50 satellites dedicated exclusively to monitoring wildfires around the globe. With a reporting frequency of every 20 minutes, this method offers far more persistent, high-resolution monitoring than currently possible.
Muon Space, one of the pioneering entities behind the project, has revealed an aggressive timeline for the roll-out of the technology. The first of these specialized satellites are set to launch in early 2025, with an additional three slated for 2026. This marks the initial phase of the mission, aimed at establishing a robust network to curb the wildfire menace.
The technology blueprint for FireSat has been in continuous development for the past five years. The effort has received significant funding support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, known for their philanthropic commitment to environmental conservation.
