Stepping into the future just got a bit more realistic. Iconic eyewear maker Ray-Ban, in collaboration with tech giant Meta, has taken an important stride by adding multimodal AI to their smart glasses. This groundbreaking technology enables an AI assistant to process multiple forms of information like photos, audio, and text, marking a significant leap in wearable technology.

As a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, I had the early privilege of testing its beta version. This early engagement allowed me to experience multimodal AI's power in object identification, and also identify areas for improvement.

The AI assistant residing in the glasses is able to provide fairly accurate object identification capabilities by processing information from its camera. Faced with different models of cars, it proved itself decently knowledgeable, but certainly not without error. As it stands, this technology seems most reliable for basic identification tasks rather than specialized or nuanced ones.

Moreover, the glasses currently lack the ability to zoom for more precise or distant object identification. This shortfall highlights how this wearable tech, while revolutionary, is still a technology in its infancy with plenty of room to progress.

Communicating with the glasses' AI assistant can initially feel like speaking in a completely new language, with specific command phrase structures required to access accurate responses. It's a learning curve that may discourage some users. One redeeming element is the promptness of the AI's responses, which is facilitated by pairing the glasses with a user's smartphone, making the dialogue feel almost instantaneous.

Where the glasses shine beyond their AI capabilities is in their additional features. The remarkable device doubles as open-ear headphones and a first-person view (POV) camera, thereby solidifying its merit as a 'face computer'. This positions the glasses as more than just a handy device but rather a versatile tech accessory integrating seamlessly into the daily life of the tech-savvy user.

The frequency of using the AI could, however, be somewhat hindered by the glasses' design. Their original role as sunglasses makes their indoor use less practical, and more creative or generative tasks may yield better results when performed manually rather than through voice command.

The deployment of this multimodal AI-enabled device is a strategic move by Ray-Ban and Meta catering to the progressively tech-inclined lifestyle of consumers. The glasses serve as an introduction to the world of wearable technology, a future where tech seamlessly merges with self-expression. This trend, if picking up the pace, might revolutionize how we interact with the digital world and render the smartphone obsolete.

While the current limitations of these glasses offer a glimpse into the potential teething problems of this technology in the wild, the concept of wearable technology and 'face computers' is no longer a concept of the future but a reality of the present. As the technology evolves and matures, its impact will become increasingly noteworthy. With continual enhancements, the vision of tomorrow becomes clearer each day.
